Women and Madness in Korean, Chinese, and Japanese Classical Literature
Abstract
This study examines the multifaceted aspects of women's "madness (狂氣)" as depicted in the classical literature of Korea, China, and Japan. The female madness projected onto these works functions as a core motif that heightens narrative conflict and exposes institutional and systemic limitations. First, internal and psychological madness serves as a narrative device that realistically reproduces the psychological collapse and ego fragmentation of women oppressed within the traditional order. Second, discursive and verbal madness—manifested through forms of language such as gibberish, curses, or "possession (憑依)" mediated through the bodies of others—sharply exposes the hypocrisy and contradictions of the patriarchal world. Third, practical and destructive madness demonstrates women's subjective will and their desperate struggle against institutional boundaries, both of which lie beneath the behaviors defined as "insanity (狂症)" by social institutions and norms. Finally, physical and transhuman madness, which transcends bodily constraints and transitions into a non-human alterity, acts as a destructive force that cracks the rigid patriarchal system by casting off the facade of the "good wife and wise mother" to voluntarily become a monster. In conclusion, the madness of women in the classical literature of the three East Asian nations was a powerful narrative methodology for expressing their existence and passions beyond the barriers of contemporary norms, as well as a poignant record of resistance to protect their own narrative breath against oppression.
