In Zhao Shuli's "The Marriage of Xiao Erhei" (小二黑結婚), the character Sanxiangu (三仙姑) has conventionally been read as a symbol of residual feudal culture and an object of ideological reform. Prior studies focusing on Sanxiangu have either defined her as a pathological figure or reinterpreted her sympathetically; yet both approaches ask only how she came to be as she is, and never ask how she comes to be excluded at the novel's close. Taking this ending as its starting point, this paper argues that what expels Sanxiangu from the community is neither the law nor the state, but the collective gaze. The subject of the gaze that disciplines her shifts from the individual patriarch to an anonymous collective—that is, to public opinion. Sanxiangu, who had resisted her father-inlaw by drawing on her authority as a shaman, becomes powerless before a public opinion she cannot evade. Her "reform," therefore, is not an achievement of the new order but the persistence of the old order's gendered discipline. The exclusion of Sanxiangu is an instance in which the liberated-area society— professing to free marriage and love from Confucian ritual propriety—once again disciplines woman as a social being, and this was accomplished through the gaze.

자오수리(趙樹理)의 ｢小二黑結婚｣에 등장하는 싼시엔구(三仙姑)는 통상 잔존하는 봉건 문화의 상징이자 교화의 대상으로 읽혀왔다. 싼시엔구에 초점을 맞춘 기존의 연구는 그를 병리적 현상으로 규정하거나 동정적으로 재해석해왔으나, 양쪽 모두 싼 시엔구가 그렇게 된 원인을 물었을 뿐, 소설의 결말에서 그가 어떻게 배제되는가는 묻지 않았다. 본고는 여기에서 출발하여, 싼시엔구를 사회로부터 축출한 것이 법률이 나 관(官)이 아니라 집단의 시선이라는 것을 논증한다. 싼시엔구를 규율한 시선의 주 체는 가부장 개인에서 익명의 집단, 곧 여론으로 이동한다. 무당이라는 권위로 시아 버지에게 대항했던 싼시엔구는 여론 앞에서는 무력해진다. 그러므로 싼시엔구의 ‘교 화’는 신질서의 성취가 아니라, 구질서의 젠더 규율이 존속한 결과다. 싼시엔구에 대 한 배제는 예교로부터의 해방을 표방한 해방구 사회가 사회적 존재로서의 여성을 다 시 규율한 사건이며, 그것은 시선을 통해 이루어졌다.
