Many places in the novel, The Journey to the West are embodied in the technique of advanced symbols and metaphors. Among them, ‘Mountain of Flowers and Fruits’ is where Sun Wu Kong was born and raised. When the subject of the place experience and the place interact with each other, ‘the place identity’ is formed. ‘Mountain of Flowers and Fruits’ is depicted in different appearances according to the birth of Sun Wukong and his Five times return. This study will figure out the development process of Sun Wukong and analyze the appearance and meaning of 'Mountain of Flowers and Fruits' that interacts with him. And through this process, I will be able to comprehend the symbolism and the place identity of ‘Mountain of Flowers and Fruits’.

서유기 속 많은 장소는 고도의 상징과 비유의 기법으로 형상화되어 있다. 그중에 서도 화과산은 손오공이 나고 자란 곳이며, 손오공과 매우 밀접하게 관계 맺고 있는 장소이다. 장소와 장소 경험의 주체가 상호 작용하면 ‘장소성’, 즉 장소의 정체성이 형성된다. 화과산은 손오공의 탄생, 손오공의 다섯 차례의 귀환에 따라 각기 다른 모 습으로 묘사되어 있다. 본 연구는 손오공의 발전과정, 변모를 살펴보고 그와 상호작 용하는 화과산의 모습, 의미 등을 분석할 것이다. 그리고 이를 통해 화과산이라는 장 소가 가지는 상징성과 장소성을 고찰해 보고자 한다.
